Al-Azzam: Enhancing Energy Efficiency Supports Lower Operating Costs, Competitiveness, and Sustainability
8 September 2026 – Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Eng. Amani Al-Azzam emphasized the importance of enhancing energy efficiency and promoting a culture of rational energy use across various sectors, contributing to lower operating costs, increased competitiveness, and greater sustainability. She noted that the National Energy Strategy aims to improve energy efficiency by 15% by 2035.
Al-Azzam made the remarks during her participation on Tuesday in an awareness workshop organized by the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) in Aqaba, in partnership with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA). The workshop aimed to introduce the Fund’s programs and mechanisms for benefiting from them, as well as to explore opportunities for cooperation and partnership with the Authority in the fields of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Al-Azzam highlighted the partnership between the Fund and the Authority and the results achieved through the implementation of several energy-efficiency projects in Aqaba. These included the installation of energy systems at a number of tourist camps and comprehensive energy-audit studies at several hotels and industrial facilities. The projects contributed to achieving financial savings of up to 40% in some sectors.
For his part, Executive Director of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund, Rasmi Hamza, stressed the importance of conducting energy audits as a key tool for identifying areas of energy waste and potential savings within facilities. He explained that the findings of these studies help facilities determine intervention priorities and select appropriate measures, particularly those with lower costs and faster returns.
Hamza also highlighted successful projects implemented by the Fund in the hotel sector in Aqaba and Petra, which contributed to improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs. He emphasized the importance of building on these experiences and expanding their application to other vital and economically significant sectors.
For his part, Commissioner for Environment at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Dr. Nidal Al-Aouran, emphasized the importance of continuing partnerships among various institutions and expanding investment in energy-efficiency and renewable-energy projects. He called for strengthening the role of commercial banks in providing accessible financing for projects aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving energy efficiency.
The workshop forms part of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund’s efforts to raise awareness of its programs and financial and technical instruments, build on successful experiences in implementing energy-efficiency projects, and strengthen public-private partnerships. These efforts contribute to achieving economic savings, reducing operating costs, and supporting environmental sustainability across various sectors.
