Al-Kharabsheh: Jordan Is a Pioneer in the Energy Transition and the Promotion of the Green Economy

1 September 2026 – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh affirmed on Tuesday that Jordan has long been a pioneer in the energy transition, particularly in increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity generation. He stressed that promoting sustainability and the green transition represents a national priority for achieving a more resilient and sustainable economy and strengthening energy security.

Al-Kharabsheh made these remarks during his participation in a session entitled “Sustainability in Jordan: A National Necessity, Not an Option,” held as part of the 2026 Green Finance Forum, organized by the Association of Banks in Jordan under the theme “Green Dialogue Between the Public and Private Sectors: A Strategic Tool for Shaping Sustainability.”

Al-Kharabsheh stated that the green transition contributes to enhancing the resilience of the national economy, noting that the Economic Modernization Vision provides a strategic framework for supporting this transition and achieving sustainable development by developing economic sectors, improving their efficiency, and strengthening their ability to address future challenges.

He explained that the world is undergoing a gradual transition away from fossil fuels towards greater use of natural gas and an expanded reliance on renewable energy, highlighting that green hydrogen represents the fuel of the future.

He also noted that Jordan is among the pioneering countries in this field, explaining that the Kingdom has begun supplying natural gas from the Risha Gas Field to most cities and industrial clusters, in addition to signing a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding related to green hydrogen production.

In this context, Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that the government has amended several pieces of legislation to support the energy transition. He explained that exemptions from taxes and fees for energy storage equipment had recently been approved.

He added that the government addresses energy issues within a comprehensive vision of economic sustainability, strengthening Jordan’s ability to withstand fluctuations in global market prices and their repercussions for supply chains, productive sectors, trade, and economic growth.

The first session was moderated by Dr. Duraid Mohasneh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of EDAMA, and included Al-Kharabsheh; Minister of Environment Dr. Ayman Suleiman; former minister and energy expert Dr. Ibrahim Saif; and Haitham Al-Bataikhi, Chief Executive Officer of the Jordan Kuwait Bank. The session discussed several themes related to sustainability as a national economic priority.

The discussion also addressed Jordan’s resilience in pursuing a just transition towards renewable energy and energy efficiency, the importance of sustainability in reducing exposure to external shocks and dependence on fossil fuels, and the role of the green transition in strengthening economic resilience.

The forum was convened in recognition of the importance of strengthening institutional dialogue among stakeholders involved in the green transition, including the government, the Central Bank, the banking sector, the private sector, international financial institutions, and development partners. The aim is to align perspectives, coordinate policies, identify national priorities, and transform environmental objectives into projects that are eligible for financing and investment.

The forum seeks to develop a shared national vision and practical recommendations that contribute to advancing Jordan’s green finance framework, improving the readiness of green projects for financing and investment, and strengthening public-private dialogue as a key enabler of a more sustainable and resilient economic transition capable of addressing future challenges.
