Amman – May 7, 2025 Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, inaugurated today the first national workshop to update Jordan’s Energy Sector Strategy for the years 2025–2035. The event witnessed broad participation from representatives of ministries, government institutions, the private sector, and both local and international partners.
In his opening remarks, Minister Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that the past years have witnessed profound transformations in the energy sector, particularly in storage technologies, renewable energy, and green hydrogen. These rapid developments, he noted, necessitate the evolution of the national strategy to remain aligned with global advancements.
He highlighted that the previous strategy aimed to increase the share of renewable energy to 31% of the total energy mix by 2030 — a target expected to be achieved earlier, between 2027 and 2028. This progress, he stated, serves as an incentive to raise future ambitions even further.
Al-Kharabsheh also pointed to a key development that will shape the new strategy: the recent discovery of new natural gas reserves by the National Petroleum Company, which is expected to significantly influence the structure of Jordan’s energy map over the next decade.
He stressed the importance of adopting a participatory approach in formulating the strategy, noting that all stakeholders — from both public and private sectors, as well as financial institutions — have been invited to contribute to developing a comprehensive strategy that reflects diverse perspectives, not just technical considerations.
The Minister further stated that the current challenges facing the energy sector will be transformed into real opportunities, positioning the sector as a cornerstone of sustainable economic development in line with the Kingdom’s Economic Modernization Vision.
He concluded by affirming that the new strategy will support economic growth, create job opportunities, increase exports, and contribute to a broader developmental renaissance.
It is worth noting that the strategy update is being carried out with technical support from the advisory team of the Green Economy Support Programme in Jordan, which began its work late last year and is providing the necessary expertise to ensure a scientific and inclusive strategy development process.
