Jordan concludes the gas platform conference (OMEC-UFM) for Mediterranean countries

March 6, 2024 - Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, concluded yesterday evening, Tuesday, the gas platform conference (OMEC-UFM) in Paris, which discussed several topics such as the role of gas in the energy transition, the future of natural gas, biogas, and methane and hydrogen potential.

 During her closing speech, Al-Azzam stressed that the Mediterranean region faces challenges and opportunities in its energy transformation journey, noting the necessity of adopting the basic mechanisms and commitments to ensure this transformation in the region.

 Regarding the mechanisms and commitments necessary for the transformation, Al-Azzam explained that the matter requires increasing renewable energy sources and enhancing efficiency to meet the demand for energy, noting that the transportation and building sectors are among the priority sectors for improving efficiency.

 Al-Azzam pointed out that delivering electricity to the end user is considered pivotal to effectively integrating sustainable energy sources, as well as strengthening electrical connectivity within the Mediterranean region, which is of great importance for achieving common goals.

 Al-Azzam pointed to green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean region, which confirms the need for large investments to achieve a successful transformation in the field of energy and to establish modern legal and financial frameworks to attract the necessary investments in the region. Al-Azzam expressed her thanks for the participation of the attendees and their contribution to enriching the conference through the sessions and discussions that help everyone to confront the global environmental and economic challenges faced by the countries participating in the conference.

 Jordan and the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM) chaired the Gas Platform Conference held in the French capital, Paris. The conference is attended by decision-makers, industry representatives and international organizations to discuss the future of energy in the Mediterranean region and the role of natural gas in the energy transition and its future in the region.

Jordan's participation in the conference reflects its commitment to international cooperation and participation in discussing energy and gas issues, and the importance of the energy and gas sector to the Kingdom.
