12 July 2026 – The Director of the Mining Directorate at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eng. Hisham Al-Zyoud, participated in a panel discussion organized by Edama Association under the patronage of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Eng. Yarub Al-Qudah, on Sunday. The session discussed the role of the circular economy in enhancing the security of critical raw materials and strengthening supply chain resilience, thereby supporting the availability of natural resources, raw materials, and supply chains.

During the session, Eng. Al-Zyoud reviewed the Ministry’s key performance indicators and achievements in the mining sector as part of its efforts to promote investment and maximize the added value of Jordan’s mineral resources. He noted that since 2021, the Ministry has signed more than 14 memoranda of understanding and agreements in the mining sector and is currently working on concluding additional agreements that will further stimulate investment and mineral exploration. He emphasized that these achievements are the result of strong institutional efforts and close coordination among various government entities.

Eng. Al-Zyoud explained that Jordan has promising reserves of strategic minerals and critical raw materials, including copper and gold in the Wadi Araba region, in addition to phosphate, silica, and rare minerals. He stressed that the Ministry is committed to increasing the added value of these resources by encouraging downstream industries and maximizing the economic benefits derived from the country’s mineral wealth, in line with the objectives of the Economic Modernization Vision.

He also pointed out that Jordan has made significant progress in diversifying its energy mix, with the share of renewable energy in electricity generation increasing from approximately 1% in 2014 to around 27% today, while dependence on conventional fuels has declined. He noted that further expansion of renewable energy projects depends on the electricity grid’s ability to accommodate additional capacity, an issue being addressed through the national energy strategy by upgrading grid infrastructure and enhancing its capabilities.

Eng. Al-Zyoud concluded by emphasizing that the energy and mining sectors form an integrated system for achieving sustainable development. He highlighted the importance of applying circular economy principles in renewable energy, water desalination, and improving resource efficiency to strengthen both water and energy security in Jordan
