Al-Kharabsheh visits the copper mining project in the Malacca Valley, south of the Dead Sea

February 10th , 2024 - Today, Saturday, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, visited mining and exploration projects for mineral resources within the area of the memorandum of understanding signed to explore copper ore with Metal Bank Limited, Australia, located in the Malacca Valley region, south of the Dead Sea.

  During his tour of the project, Minister Al-Kharabsha was briefed on the work carried out by the company in drilling operations, and the progress of work and the timetable for the project, which is being implemented by a local drilling company specialized in this field.

For his part, the representative of MBK in Jordan and the engineer responsible for drilling in the project provided a detailed explanation about the initial results in copper ore exploration operations, well drilling operations, collecting rock samples methods, and preparing chemical analyzes methods  aimed at determining the types of mineralization of copper ores in the region, pointing out that there are Good indications, which will be confirmed through drilling operations and sample analysis carried out by the company according to the project schedule, and in light of the results of laboratory tests,  the company will inform the Ministry about them, stressing that the company intends to drill four deep mining exploratory wells in the study area.

Minister Kharabsheh praised the company’s efforts and its commitment to implementing the exploration program according to the agreed upon timetable, stressing Jordan’s keenness under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the Jordanian government to restore momentum to the mining sector and raise its level in an effort to provide the sector with added value, which would attract investment in the Jordanian mining sector. Highlighting national resources and investment opportunities available in the energy sector, and encouraging local and foreign companies to invest in the sector.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources signed 11 memorandums of understanding to study and evaluate various raw materials in copper, gold, lithium, rare earth elements, and phosphate and rock potash with seven local and international companies. Mentioning that, the Ministry signed on 7/18th /2023 a memorandum of understanding with Metal Bank Limited (MBK) Australia to prepare exploratory studies for copper ores in the Malacca Valley region, south of the Dead Sea, for a period of 24 months on a land area of 25 kilometers to evaluate the copper ore, provided that the company submits a preliminary economic feasibility report at the end of the agreement period.

The visit of the Minister of Energy to the project area comes within the field follow-up program to which Al-Kharabsheh pays great attention and direct supervision to see these companies’ commitment to the terms of the memorandums of understanding.

The interest in the mining sector comes as it is a sector classified within the motivation of high-value industries in the vision of economic modernization, which aims to develop Jordan to be a center for the manufacturing industry in the region by supplying fast-growing exports with distinguished and high-value products.

Minister Al-Kharabsha was accompanied on his visit by the Director of Natural Resources Studies, Hisham Al-Zyoud, the Head of the Exploratory Studies Department, Moatasem Hawamdeh, and the geologist, Muhannad Hamza, from the Natural Resources Projects Directorate in the Ministry.
